Our Impact

Alaska Chugach Backcountry Freeriders is a volunteer-driven recreation group focused on trail stewardship, access, and community involvement. Our impact includes year-round trail maintenance, winter grooming operations, and investment in equipment that supports safe backcountry use. We have also engaged in land-use discussions, including the proposed Alaska Long Trail National Scenic Trail designation, to ensure motorized users and local communities were represented. Our work emphasizes responsible recreation, collaboration, and long-term access for Alaska’s backcountry users.

Fighting the NST on the AK Long Trail

Alaska Chugach Backcountry Freeriders actively engaged in the public process surrounding the proposed Alaska Long Trail National Scenic Trail designation to ensure motorized access, local use, and community perspectives were fully considered. Our involvement included meetings with land management agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, communication with the U.S. Department of the Interior, and organizing public participation through petitions and outreach. Through these efforts, we helped elevate concerns about how the designation could affect existing access and trail management, emphasizing the importance of balanced recreation planning and inclusive decision-making. Our work contributed to ensuring that the proposed designation did not move forward without addressing the impacts to motorized users and local communities.

Correcting Public Trail Map Information

Alaska Chugach Backcountry Freeriders identified inaccuracies in a publicly posted borough trail map that misrepresented existing trail uses, including motorized access. After reviewing the map and its underlying data, we engaged with the appropriate borough staff to raise concerns and provide clarification based on on-the-ground knowledge and historical use. Through this process, corrections were made to ensure the map more accurately reflected how the trails are actually used by the public. This effort helped improve transparency, reduce confusion, and ensure future planning decisions were based on accurate information.

Participation in State Forest Planning

Alaska Chugach Backcountry Freeriders participated in public discussions related to the creation of state forests and the development of associated forest management plans. Our involvement focused on ensuring that motorized access, traditional uses, and recreation were appropriately considered during the planning process. By providing public input and engaging in discussions with agencies and stakeholders, we worked to support balanced management approaches that recognize the role of motorized recreation alongside conservation, access, and long-term stewardship.

Partnership with the U.S. Forest Service

Alaska Chugach Backcountry Freeriders established a working partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to support trail maintenance efforts on the eastern Kenai Peninsula. Through this collaboration, our organization contributes volunteer labor, equipment use, and local trail knowledge to help maintain and improve motorized trail access in the area. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to responsible stewardship, safe recreation, and long-term trail sustainability, while ensuring motorized users remain an active and recognized part of trail management efforts.
